The Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí’s most iconic masterpiece and Barcelona’s most visited monument, has just broken a new record: it is now officially the tallest building in the city. Thanks to the progress on the Tower of Jesus Christ, the basilica has reached a height of 158.78 meters, overtaking the iconic skyscrapers of the Olympic Port.
This milestone marks the beginning of the final construction phase expected in the coming years.
🏟️ The Tower of Jesus: the central symbol of the temple
The Tower of Jesus is the tallest of the 18 towers designed by Gaudí. It represents Christ and is surrounded by towers dedicated to the evangelists. Once completed, it will reach 172.5 meters, crowned by a 17-meter illuminated cross.
Why not make it taller? Gaudí deliberately limited the height so as not to surpass Montjuïc hill, in a symbolic gesture of humility and respect for nature.
